  El vino fue el principal producto exportador de las Islas Canarias durante un largo período de su historia económica (1550-1840). De ahí que la historiografía se haya interesado por esclarecer las etapas de auge y declive de esta agroindustria, su escenario mercantil atlántico y el papel que ejerció sobre la estructura económica del país.
  
  Este artículo analiza los costes y beneficios de los hacendados que dedicaron sus viñas a la producción de malvasía para el mercado inglés durante la fase de expansión y posterior ocaso de esta actividad exportadora.

  Wine was the main exporting product of the Canary Islands for a long period of its economic history (1550-1840). Historiography has tried to shed light on the stages of growth and decline of this export wine industry, its Atlantic mercantile scenario and how it influenced the structure of the local economy. This article is part of this line of research. It analyses the costs and benefits of the landowners who dedicated their vineyards to the production of malvasía wines for the English market during the phase of growth and decline of this export activity
