The so called «Madonna di Trapani» was originally a sculpture made in the XIVth century by Nino Pisano for the island of Cyprus. It is presumed that this image never reached the island due a storm near Trapani in Sicily.
The image became the center of great devotion through the copies or interpretations of Francesco Laurana and Domenico Gagini. It was appointed as patron of the Carmelitan Order. From G. Gunppenberg (1657) is known that in the XVIth, XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries were more than 40 workshops at Trapani were made. The coat of arms of the town appears in most of them. In this paper are studied the many copies found in spanish churches, convents, museums and private collections.
