  • Resumen
    • This paper delves into the study of the fortified defense system built between the XVII and XIX centuries on the road (Camino Real) from Veracruz to Mexico. This structure, which is composed of various types of fortifications, as well as by additional constructions which vestiges are possible to appreciate today in multiple villages adjacent to the old routes (for Orizaba and Perote) The Camino Real, was the result not only of the military needs arising from the complicated geopolitical situation of the time, but the interests of different parties and institutions, such as the Spanish Crown, the commercial consulates, the vice royal authorities and the owners of farms and ranches, interests that were often difficult to reconcile, and were even sometimes contradictory, which largely explains the geographical dispersion of the buildings, their typological diversity and above all, the problems for their erection and maintenance.
