This investigation attempts to characterize the economic-regional behavior of the sugar haciendas in Morelos 1880-1912, with the intention of providing better cartographic and statistical information. The natural comparative advantages as well as economic, social, political administrative characteristics were analyzed from the perspective of spatial distribution, through the implementation of Geographic Information Systems. The results show how the interests of villages and communities revolved around the commercial exploitation of small properties that collided with the ‘big business’ interests of the sugar haciendas.
