Entre las muchas aportaciones al pa- norama literario medieval que hace Don Pedro (1429-1466), condestable de Portu- gal y primer autor portugués que escribe en castellano, su defensa de la dignidad del sexo femenino es quizás la menos estudia- da. En este artículo se busca paliar dicha carencia con el fin de entender cómo Doña Isabel (1432-1455) –hermana de Don Pe- dro y reina de Portugal– fue utilizada para articular una agenda política, literaria y personal en torno a la destrucción de la Casa de Avís tras la batalla de Alfarrobeira (1449).

The importance of Don Pedro’s literary personality in late medieval letters is undeniable.
However, the contribution by Don Pedro (1429-1466), Constable of Portugal, to the corpus on the defense of the dignity of the female gender is an aspect not yet fully explained by scholars. This article aims to fill that void by analyzing how Queen Isabel of Portugal (1447-1455; b.in 1432 )–Don Pedro´s sister, and also a reader of, and a character in, Don Pedro´s works– was a key element in the articulation of a political, literary, and personal agenda that sprang from the ruin of the Avis family after the Battle of Alfarrobeira (1449).
