Nowadays there is a growing interest on the replacement of traditional plastics by more sustainable plastics with the main objective to produce lower environmental impact. Therefore, the production and the use of biobased and biodegradable plastics have considerably increased. Natural products, mainly active compounds, plant extracts and essential oils, are interesting sustainable additives for the processing plastics industry because they allow improving the plastics transformation process, as well as providing functional properties to the final material (antimicrobial and/or antioxidant properties). The use of antioxidants has a special interest in the plastics industry to prevent thermo-oxidative degradation during the transformation process. This article introduces commonly used antioxidants in the plastics industry and reports their mechanisms. The advantages of using natural antioxidants as sustainable additives are discussed. Moreover, some examples about the addition of natural active agents into biobased and / or biodegradable polymer matrices are commented
