  • Resumen
    • To determine the feasibility of substituting corn for cassava root meal (CRM) or taro corm meal (TCM) an experiment was carried out using 50 hybrid pigs with an initial weight of 24 kg on a randomized 72-day blocks treatment design with 5 repetitions and assigned to 5 treatments: basic diet (BD), and corn substituted with 50 % CRM, 100 % CRM, 50 % TCM and 100 % TCM. Feed intake was similar (P>.05) for all the animals. Pigs which consumed 100 % TCM had the least increase in weight which was similar (P>.05) to those which consumed 50 % TCM or 100 % CRM. Animals on the 50 % CRM and BD had the greatest weight gain (P.05) in all the animals. The 50 % CRM half carcasses were the heaviest Average back fat and loin eye area was similar (P>.05) for all pigs. The cost of the 100% CRM ration was a 23 56% less than the BD ration. It was concluded that corn can be totally replaced by CRM or 50% RCM without significantly effect behavior and produced a product at a lower cost.
