In the 1970s social awareness of the effects of indutrial activities on the environment and our food chains grew enormously. At the same time large scale farm animal husbandry evolved rapidly in the Netherlands as elsewhere. In the context of environmental pollution, factory farming became regarded as both a victim and a source of environmental pollution. Regulations such as those regarding tolerable levels of environmental pollutants in animal products became elaborate and important. In the Utrecht faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Knowledge about the effects of environmental pollution on animal health and the safety of animal products was mainly taught in the disciplines toxicology and food hygiene. In 1998 the new discipline of Veterinary Environmental Sciences was added to the core curriculum. Since the transition to the Bologna Bachelor-Master model in 2010, the subject has been integrated in "Ethics, Legislation and Environmental Sciences". Although no longer taught as separate subject and reduced in size, it continues to have an essential place in the curriculum.
