Resumen de Assessing Resource Bias and Engaging Students To Personalize Class Content through Internet Social Tagging

Laura E. Pence, Harry E. Pence

  • Social tagging, familiar to most students because of the great popularity of YouTube and Flickr, has emerged as a social networking tool for organizing the vast quantities of information available on the Internet. We incorporated one of the more popular social tagging utilities, del.icio.us, as a teaching tool in two different chemistry classes. Students were required to bookmark Web sites on a common account regularly, which provided the opportunity to teach students to evaluate Web sites for reliability and bias. The social tagging assignments also provided a means of incorporating current data into class discussions, and it allowed students the opportunity to contribute information of personal interest to the general class dialogue. This strategy was easy to adopt and cost nothing, which makes implementing social tagging appropriate for a broad range of courses.
