  • The article discusses the painting "A scholar and four figures with masks" by the 17th-century Dutch artist Willem van der Vliet. The author argues that the painting refers to a dialogue by the Stoic philosopher Epictetus in which masks are mentioned. More specifically, the author links the painting to a passage in Epictetus' "Dissertationes" in which Socrates is quoted as saying that death and pain are like masks.
