A Point of Departure for Giovanni Battista Bissoni as a Draftsman

  • The article discusses a group of four black chalk sketches attributed to the 17th century Italian artist Giovanni Battista Bissoni. The author suggests that the drawings, which have been previously attributed to Domenico Fetti, can serve as a point of departure in the study of Bissoni's style as a draftsman. It is argued that the drawings are studies for the arched-top altarpiece of the "Assumption of the Virgin" painted by the artist for the parish church of Salboro, near Padua, Italy. In the studies, the artist explored the composition of various figures including the Virgin Mary and apostles.
