  • Resumen
    • An exploration of the numbering system that the 17th-century Dutch artist Salomon de Bray used to identify the sequence of his paintings. This practice is evident on the reverse of an exceptionally well-preserved painting from his oeuvre that has been part of the collection of the Earls of Spencer at Althorp in Northamptonshire, England, from as early as the 17th century. By referring to the serial number that De Bray placed on the reverse of the painting, it is possible to identify it as the work immediately preceding one that is currently on display at the Museum Nacional del Prado in Madrid. Further panels by De Bray display similar numbers and dates, forming a unique source of information in reconstructing the chronology of his output, while also raising the question of whether other artists used similar methods.
