  • Resumen
    • We present the case of a 35-year-old male under general anesthesia for a resection of nodules in his vocal chords. The patient presents signs of an anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reaction after the parenteral administration of atracurium besylate. The anaphylaxis is an exaggerated response to an extraneous substance that is mediated by an antigen-antibody reaction (hypersensitivity reaction of type I). The anaphylactoid reactions are similar to the anaphylactic ones, but they do not depend on the IgE antigen-antibody interaction. Although the mechanisms differ, the anaphylactic ant the anaphylactoid reactions may be clinically indistinguishable and equally threatening for life itself. During general anesthesia, patients may present altered sympathic-adrenergic responses to the acute anaphylactic shock. We describe the spectrum of responsible mechanisms to the grace allergic reactions during the perioperative period and we comment on a protocol for conducting the anaphylasis during general anesthesia
