Resumen de Inhibidores selectivos de la cox-2: ¿Sólo ventajas?

Natalia Creus Baró, N. Izco García, F. Sorio Vilela, Carlos Codina Jané, Josep Ribas Sala

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs act inhibiting cyclooxygenase, a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins. There exist two isoforms of this enzyme, cyclooxygenase-1 and cyclooxygenase-2. The first one is constitutive and responsible for physiological functions of the prostaglandins. The second one is fundamentally expressed in response to inflammatory stimuli and it is responsible for the production of inflammatory prostaglandins. Inhibiting selective drugs in the cyclooxygenase-2, rofecoxib and celecoxib, would be able to maintain the therapeutic efficacy of classical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs without presenting their toxicity, being a new and attractive alternative specially in the handling of chronic diseases (like arthrosis). Despite the prior advantages that this new group of drugs presents, it is recommended precaution in their prescription, at least, until more detailed and long-term results would be available
