San Marcos de León. Historia del fondo documental, fábrica e institución del Archivo de la Orden de Santiago en el Priorato de León (1170-1872).

    El archivo de San Marcos de León es el principal fondo documental de la Orden militar de Santiago en su provincia de León. El convento de San Marcos custodió durante siete siglos (desde el siglo XII hasta el siglo XIX) la documentación de la Orden perteneciente a sus territorios de Extremadura, León y Galicia. El artículo es un estudio de este archivo como edificio, institución y fondo documental.

    Los documentos aportan información sobre la fábrica y emplazamiento del archivo, así como de las personas que se ocuparon de él durante estas siete centurias. El archivo de San Marcos estaba dentro del convento y evolucionó al mismo tiempo, influenciado por su historia y por la consideración que en cada momento se le dio. En este artículo se estudia la etapa de San Marcos antes de pertenecer a la Orden, la etapa prearchivística (que comenzó en el siglo XII) y la etapa archivística (que fue muy tardía porque se inició en el siglo XVIII).

    Por tanto, el artículo tiene un carácter transversal, desde el siglo XII al XVIII, en el que el período medieval es relevante porque sienta las bases del archivo (tanto en su fábrica como fondo documental), a él pertenece su principal instrumento de descripción y resulta imprescindible para comprender la historia de este archivo hasta su desamortización

    St. Mark�s Archives in León are the main documentary collection of the Military Order of St. James in the province of León. Saint Mark�s monastery kept for seven centuries (from the 12th to the 19th century) the documentation of the Order belonging to the territories of Extremadura, León and Galicia.

    This article is a study of those archives considered as a building, as an institution and as a documentary collection. The documents provide information on the making and the location of the archives, as well as about the people who looked after them for those seven centuries. St. Mark�s Archives were inside the convent and evolved simultaneously, influenced by its history and the status it had at each given time. In this article we will study the period before St. Mark�s belonged to the Order, the pre-archival stage (which started in the 12th century) and the archival stage (which was a late stage that did not begin until the 18th century). Thus, this article has a transversal nature covering from the 12th to the 18th century, where the Medieval period is significant because it lays the foundations for the archives � both their making and their documentary collection. Moreover, its main descriptive instrument also belongs to the Medieval period, which is essential too in order to understand the history of these archives until their disentailment
