The population of Block-headed Gulls Larus ridibundus wintering in Madrid [Central Spain] has increased continuously since 1980, reaching over 70, 000in dividuals in the winter of 1993. This paper examines the daily and monthly variations in the number of gulls feeding in a large rubbish dump outside the city of Madrid, in oddition to the age and sex cornposition of the wintering population. The durnp is mainly used during the morning and rnidday hours by adult female birds
