  • Resumen
    • [...]chapter 5 ("tourist troubles: the travels of Global rumor") concentrates on how rumors reveal Americans' mixed feelings about the "exotic" by demonstrating that rumors, jokes, and cautionary tales represent overlap- ping genres. of all the volume's chapters, the examination of the theme of naïve American tourists is by far the most novel. [...]some readers may find the inclusion of a pet-based joke/rumor complex such as the "the mexican pet" (p. 135) or of American advertising mis- steps such as the well-known marketing of a soft drink to chinese ("Pepsi brings your ances- tors back from the grave" [p. 128]) somewhat problematic. i agree that at first it may appear to be a stretch to see how this chapter relates to the author's stated goal to "show how rumors that concern global politics matter" (p. 3), but it is an indication of the intricately woven na- ture of the subject matter that this and subse- quent chapters examine.
