El propósito del artículo es analizar la cacería de brujas como forma de control social en los Estados Unidos tanto en un hecho histórico, los procesos de Salem, Massachussetts en 1692, como en dos obras literarias,The crucible (1953) de Arthur Miller y paradise (1998) de Toni Morrison. Las acusaciones de brujería han dejado una marca indeleble en la cultura estadounidense y se han transformado en un sinónimo de la intolerancia y de la represión que sufren aquellos que osan discrepar con el ideario de los poderosos.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze "witch hunting" as a form of social control in America, in a historical event, the Salem Witchcraft Trial in 1692, as well as in two literary texts, The crucible (1953) by Arthur Miller and Paradise (1998) by Toni Morrison. Witchcraft accusations have left an indelible mark in American culture and have become a synonym of the intolerance and repression to be suffered by the people who dare oppose the authority of those with power in the community.
