During the Atlantic slave trade, Pernambuco received about nine hundred thousand individuals, behind the Rio de Janeiro, where the court was located, and Bahia, former seat of colonial government. Recife thus became the third imperial capital where different brands and lines of Africans were overweight. Until the first half of the nineteenth century, the people of Africa were among the most enslaved in the city and maintaining the slave system was given by incessant imports, mainly between the decades of 1830-40. Slavery was turning into African people from different places on that continent. But individuals reelaboravam their cultural and ethnic at the same time they were constantly reinvented. This article discusses the profile of this African contingent and its cultural diversity, in the second half of the nineteenth century, through the main population census of the Province, estimates of trafficking and baptismal records from Recife city.
