    Las catedrales novohispanas, dentro de las cuales se inscribe la catedral de Mérida, Yucatán, se desarrollaron como centros de interacción social, en los que la liturgia (culto religioso) cobró una importante función de legitimación del orden social establecido; inherente a la catedral se encontraba el Cabildo catedralicio, una de las más importantes corporaciones del Antiguo Régimen, el cual se encargaba de la celebración del culto religioso y en el que la música tuvo un papel primordial, al grado de que existía una institución dedicada exclusivamente al acompañamiento musical de la liturgia catedralicia: la capilla de catedral, Cabildo catedralicio, capilla de música, culto religioso.

    New Spain Cathedrals, such as the one located in Merida, Yucatan, were developed as centers of social interaction, in which liturgy (religious worship) took an important role in the legitimization of the social order; inherent to the cathedral was the Cathedral Chapter, one of the largest corporations of the Ancient Regime, who were in charge of celebrating the Religious Office, were music had a major role, to the extent that there was an institution dedicated exclusively to the musical accompaniment of the cathedral liturgy: the Music Chapel
