En el presente trabajo se estudia la murmuración como eje central para la estructura y la confi guración del protagonista en el Guzmán de Alfarache (1599-1604). En este sentido, se plantea que el episodio más polémico del libro �la ambigüedad de la conversión de Guzmán- no puede entenderse sin considerar el fenómeno de marras y la actio que de éste se deriva. Finalmente se muestra que prédica y murmuración constituyen un binomio indisoluble no sólo en el Guzmán, sino también en otras obras de Mateo Alemán como el San Antonio de Padua (1604) y los Sucesos de don fray García Guerra (1613).

This paper examines the act of backbiting as a key component of the structure of Guzmán de Alfarache and of the shaping of the protagonist. It proposes that the most controversial event �the ambiguity of Guzmán�s conversion- cannot be understood without taking into consideration the act of malicious fault-fi nding and the actio that derives from it. Finally, it shows that preaching and backbiting go hand in hand not only in Guzmán the Alfarache, but also in other works by Alemán such as San Antonio de Padua (1604) and the Sucesos de don fray García Guerra (1613).
