El complejo catedralicio burgalés a lo largo de la Edad Media (siglos XI-XIV): Hipótesis para un debate

    La actual catedral de Burgos, magna obra gótica del siglo XIII, estuvo precedida por un conjunto episcopal anterior mandado edificar por Alfonso VI a finales del siglo XI a raíz de la fundación de la nueva sede burgalesa. El desconocimiento sobre esa catedral románica es casi total, dado que nunca han sido llevadas a cabo excavaciones arqueológicas de peso en su antiguo solar, de modo que buena parte de las teorías aquí vertidas nacen de una cuidadosa lectura de la documentación conservada. Algunas de ellas plantean ciertas cuestiones novedosas, como su hipotética configuración a partir de tres templos independientes. Para acabar, se realizan algunos comentarios respecto al carácter eminentemente funerario del conjunto gótico que sustituyó a la sede románica.

    The cathedral of Burgos, which is a Gothic chef d�oeuvre from the 13th century, was preceded by an Episcopal complex erected by Alfonso VI at the end of the 11th century, after the foundation of the new cathedral. Little is known about that Romanesque cathedral, due to the lack of serious archaeological excavations in the former perimeter of the building. Therefore, the theories expressed in this article come from the lecture of the written sources that are preserved. Some of these sources permit to establish new approaches, as for example the configuration of three independent buildings. To conclude, the mainly funerary character of the Gothic complex, which replaced the Romanesque building, is exposed.
