El artículo analiza el mundillo teatral español de la primera mitad del siglo XX a través de los comentarios que Jacinto Benavente inserta en sus obras metateatrales, complementados con afirmaciones de sus numerosos ensayos y escritos sobre dramaturgia. Tiene por finalidad dar a conocer mejor el ambiente en que se elaboraban y estrenaban las comedias de su tiempo, los constreñimientos de los autores, las limitaciones de los intérpretes, el influjo de la crítica y, en general, los aspectos complementarios que acababan afectando a la elaboración del texto teatral. Es una mirada irónica y humorística, que tiende a desmitificar el mundo bohemio del teatro y a descubrir en muchos casos, su corrupción interna.

This article analyzes the Spanish theatrical scene of the first half of the 20th century through the comments that Jacinto Benavente inserted in his metathreatical works, supplemented by statements of his many essays and writings on drama. It aims to raise awareness about the environment they were produced and premiered the plays of his time, the constraints of the authors, the limitations of the performers, the influence of criticism and, in general, complementary aspects affecting ended the development of the theatrical text. It is an ironic and humorous look, which tends to demystify the bohemian world of the theater and discover in many cases their internal corruption.
