Resumen de La higiene del yo: Ciencia médica y subjetividad burguesa en la España del siglo XIX

El artículo examina la contribución de los médicos españoles del siglo XIX a la higiene psíquica desde el punto de vista de una historia cultural de la subjetividad. Así, tras reconstruir sus discursos en torno a los efectos disruptivos de la imaginación y las pasiones en el contexto de una serie de inquietudes relacionadas con el psiquismo en el tránsito a la Modernidad, se describen las estrategias propuestas en la literatura higienista para contrarrestar estas amenazas a la integridad del yo. De este modo, se ponen de manifiesto los atributos esenciales del patrón de reflexividad esbozado normativamente por los médicos del Ochocientos, mostrando su afinidad con la autocomprensión psicológica de las nuevas elites liberales y, por tanto, su impronta distintivamente burguesa.

This article examines the contribution of nineteenth-century Spanish physicians to psychic hygiene from the point of view of a cultural history of subjectivity. So, after reconstructing their discourses on the disruptive effects of the imagination and the passions in the context of broader concerns related to psychic activity on the threshold of modernity, it describes the strategies proposed in the hygienist literature in order to avoid or combat these threats to the integrity of the self. The essential attributes of the pattern of reflexivity normatively outlined by Spanish physicians are thus uncovered, showing their affinity with the psychological self-understanding of the new liberal elites and, therefore, their distinctly bourgeois character
