    El bombardeo de Guernica es el acontecimiento más conocido de la Guerra Civil en el País Vasco. Con independencia de la brutalidad del ataque, el hecho de que la villa foral y su árbol fueran desde el siglo XIX un símbolo de la libertad vasca dio a este ataque un valor añadido. El cine nacionalista vasco producido durante la guerra subrayó por ello que el bombardeo era una agresión al pueblo vasco. Esta interpretación, presente en muchas películas, ha continuado hasta la actualidad, contribuyendo a hacer de Guernica un símbolo, no exento de cierta mitificación

    The bombing of Guernica is by far the most well-known event of the Spanish civil war in the Basque region. Apart from the brutality of the attack, the offense was deepened given the fact that the tree had been an important symbol of Basque freedom since the nineteenth century.

    Nationalist Basque productions during the civil war emphasized the aggression as an attack on the Basque community. This interpretation was present in many films and continues today, creating the symbol of Guernica, not entirely without a certain degree of mythification
