By the end of the XVIIIth century and during the first three decades of the XIXth century, continental Portugal functioned as a vital commercial platform to satisfy the demand for colonial products in different European markets. This study, based on archival sources from Brazil, Portugal, and Hamburg, analyzes the importance of Brazilian products among Portuguese exports to Hamburg from 1796 to 1831, which consisted mainly of one product: sugar, both in its white and brown varieties. It also tries to show in how far Portugal profited from its position as intermediary between Brazil and Hamburg.
