    Entre los personajes mencionados por el poeta latino Marcial figura el nombre de Auitus, el amigo al que está dedicado el epigrama «extraordinario» con que se inicia el libro IX. Este personaje ha sido identificado con L. Stertinius Auitus que fue consul suffectus en el año 92 d.C., puesto que el propio poeta precisa el «nomen» Stertinius en una corta epístola dirigida a su también amigo Toranio. Pero no hay datos que permitan pensar que Auitus el amigo de Marcial pueda ser el hipotético sanctus Auitus martyr al que aluden, entre otros, los escritores españoles Francisco de Vivar y Juan Tamayo Salazar. El autor de este artículo hace una exposición de los textos tanto literarios como epigráficos que han servido para identificar al amigo de Marcial con L. Stertinius Auitus, así como los argumentos esgrimidos por los mencionados escritores españoles para identificar a éste con el incierto mártir cristiano del s. II d.C.

    Among the prominent figures mentioned by the Latin poet Martial is one Auitus, the friend to which he dedicated the «extraordinary» epigram with which book IX begins. This individual has been identified as L. Stertinius Auitus, consul suffectus in the year 92 A.D., since the poet himself specifies the «nomen» Stertinius in a short letter addressed to Toranio, who was also his friend. There is, however, no information that would allow us to think that Martial’s friend Auitus should be the hypothetical sanctus Auitus martyr to which the Spanish historians Francisco de Vivar and Juan Tamayo Salazar, among others, allude. The author of this paper examines both the literary and epigraphic texts that have served to identify Martial’s friend with L. Stertinius Auitus, as well as the arguments used by Spanish historians mentioned above to identify Auitus with the questionable second century Christian martyr.
