  Después del fracaso económico de los años 70 y de no haber podido resolver desde entonces sus múltiples problemas, la industria nuclear iba camino de una lenta pero inexorable agonía. Sin embargo, la necesidad de reducir las emisiones de CO2 y el previsible declive de la producción de combustibles fósiles han revitalizado la opción nuclear hasta el punto de convertirla de nuevo en uno de los elementos centrales del debate energético mundial. Ahora bien, se corre el riesgo de olvidar que las causas del abrupto fin de la primera era nuclear siguen vigentes, y que por tanto es probable que asistamos a una repetición de lo ocurrido entonces y que el tan cacareado renacimiento nuclear acabe en una recaída que provoque un aborto prematuro

  After the economic failure of the 70�s and not having been able to solve for decades its multiple problems, the nuclear industry was suffering a slow but inescapable agony.

  However, the need to reduce CO2 emissions and the likely arrival of the worldwide peak of oil production have infused new life to the nuclear option, and it has again become one of the main topics of discussion in the worldwide energy debate. But in this debate we tend to forget that the causes of the abrupt end of the first nuclear era have not disappeared, and that for this reason it may well be that we are lead to a repetition of the events that induced its first demise. The much talked nuclear renaissance is thus likely to end up as a premature miscarriage
