At the present time sorne 45 per cent ofthe word's working population is engaged in agriculture. However, sorne of the agreements of the World Trade Organization (WTO) threaten the existence of these peasants as well as the agricultural and biological heritage of many countries. This was the case with the agricultural agreement of the Uruguay Round, which opened the way to the commercial liberalization ofthe agricultural sector and thus to the drastic reduction in subsidies to farmers and to the agreement on intellectual property which established global regulations concerning patents, brands and authors' rights. These agreements too affected negatively the countries ofthe Third World who were forced to reorganize their production methods under strong pressure from the WTO and the transnationals themselves, who are benefitting from this situation.

Aujourd'hui, l'agriculture occupe approximativement 45% des actifs dans le monde. Or, certains accords de l'OMC (Organisation mondiale du commerce) mcnacent l'existence de ces paysans tout comme l'héritage agricole et hiologique de nombreux pays. Il en va ainsi de l'accord agricole de/ 'Uruguay Round qui ouvre la voie a la libéralisation commerciale du secteur agricole et done a la diminution drastique des subsides aux agriculteurs et del 'accord sur la propriété intellectuelle qui établit des regles mondiales en matiere de brevets, de marques et de droits d'auteur. Á nouveau, ces accords portent surtout préjudice aux pays du Tiers Monde qui se sont vus obligés de réorganiser leurs modes de production sous les fortes pressions del 'OMC et des transnationales cllcs-memes qui tirent profit de cette situation.
