Luego de su arrollador triunfo en las elecciones de diciembre, Evo Morales ha dado los primeros pasos en el gobierno intentando conciliar las tres grandes tendencias que cruzan su partido: la fuerte reivindicación indigenista, el antiimperialismo de izquierda y la valorización de la democracia, cuyo principal defensor parece ser el mismo presidente. Sobre la base de entrevistas inéditas a los principales líderes del MAS, se traza aquí un mapa de los retos y desafíos que enfrenta Morales, quien deberá hacer concesiones, buscar equilibrios y articular creativamente las diferentes corrientes, si quiere transformar a la sociedad boliviana y consolidar la democracia.

After his overwhelming triumph in the December elections, Evo Morales has begun his government trying to reconcile the three broad tendencies represented in his party: the strong indigenous demands, the Left-Wing anti-imperialism, and the democratic impulse, whose principal defender seems to be the president himself. On the basis of unpublished interviews with the principal leaders of the MAS party, this article offers an analysis of the main challenges faced by Morales, who will have to make concessions, seek a delicate balance and find a creative way of articulating the different currents, if he is to transform Bolivian society and consolidate its democracy.
