Resumen de Los instrumentos de medida de las identidades en los estudios del CIS y el Eurobarómetro: problemas de validez de la denominada escala Moreno

Esta nota de investigación señala, en primer lugar, las importantes discrepancias que existen entre los datos del CIS y los Eurobarómetros en su medida de las identidades española y europea. En segundo lugar, y fundamentalmente, trata de averiguar hasta qué punto estamos ante problemas que tienen que ver con los instrumentos de medición empleados. Esta cuestión es importante dadas las posibles consecuencias que se derivarían, desde el punto de vista de la política europea de España, en función de los diferentes resultados que cada una de estas fuentes ofrece. La presente nota de investigación pone de manifiesto que aunque el instrumento de medición utilizado por el CIS y el EB produce medidas fiables en cada país (consistentes en mediciones repetidas a lo largo del tiempo), no es un instrumento válido ya que las discrepancias entre ambas fuentes hacen dudar de que realmente se esté midiendo lo que quiere medirse. Al margen de las críticas generales que diferentes autores han aplicado a este tipo de escalas actitudinales, unidimensionales y dicotómicas, se observa que pequeñas alteraciones en el enunciado y las categorías de respuesta producen diferencias tan grandes en los resultados que debemos preguntarnos sobre la utilidad de seguir utilizando este instrumento. Por último, se discute el uso de medidas alternativas a la escala Moreno, usadas puntualmente por el CIS y el EB pero que no han alcanzado la popularidad de aquélla, atendiendo simultáneamente al papel de la identidad como variable dependiente o independiente en el diseño de la investigación.

This research note presents, in the first place, the rather large differences between CIS and EB measurements of national and European identities in Spain. More important though, and secondly, it attempts to find out to what extent we are looking at problems related to the measuring instruments used. This is an important issue given the possible consequences that would arise, from the viewpoint of Spain?s European policy, according to the different results offered by each of these sources. This research note shows that although the measuring instrument used by the CIS and the EB (the Moreno scale) produces reliable measurements in each country (with consistent measurements over time), it is not a valid instrument since the differences between both sources give rise to doubt that what is intended to be measured really is being measured. Aside from the general criticisms that various authors have applied to this type of attitudinal, onedimensional, dichotomic scale, it is clear that small changes in the wording and response categories produce such great differences in the results that we should ask ourselves whether it really is worthwhile continuing to use this instrument. Lastly, we discuss the use of alternatives to the Moreno Scale that are sometimes used by the CIS and the EB but which have not achieved the same level of popularity, while also taking into account the role of identity of a dependent or independent variable in research design.
