On the individual scale, the main problem which is being raised by tourist leisure as a manifestation of mass culture centers around the ideas of participation and communication. The realization of the man as an individual person within the mass tourism of our times has suffered the limitations and deformations imposed by consumerism and semantization. On dealing with tourism as the new exploitation of time-merchandise and as the création of images and symbol-objects, its cultural content has been diluted and, what is more serious, ¡t has compromised the intímate individual liberty which constitutes the supreme postúlate of the tourist adventure. The world of the socio-cultural and psychic «valúes» of future leisure requires the re-evaluation of a true «theory of tourism» capable of overcoming the restrictions to which the practice of travel and the massive and other-determined vacation have brought this human and universal phenomenon. In this "«renaissance» of the human valúes of tourism there will concur a cultural dynamic which is already showing promising symptoms of rebellion against the excessively commercial and frivolous treatment of leisure as escape, overlooking its profound cultural and humanistic content.
