La investigación histórica de la música de España e Iberoamérica dedica gran parte de su tiempo y empeño en recuperar el patrimonio artístico producido en tiempos pasados y todavía no recuperado del todo. Sin embargo, otros propósitos son posibles para la musicología, fuera de las dos ramas tradicionales, la histórica y la sistemática. Desde el siglo XIX la sociedad se ha volcado hacia la música de tiempos pasados contradiciendo la costumbre ancestral de «consumir» prioritariamente música propia de su tiempo. Este cambio de hábito exige al musicólogo estudiar experimentalmente dicha música, no de manera distante, como mero fenómeno cultural, humanístico, de otros tiempos, sino como «ars fluens», como música viva del presente y como hecho artístico nuevo donde intervienen los musicólogos junto con los intérpretes, compositores y otros agentes en la tarea sacar la música de los escritos y ponerla en el aire.

Spanish and Latin American's music historical investigation expends most of its time and effort on recovering artistic heritage produced in the past which is still not completely recovered. However, apart from the two traditional branches, the historical and the systematic, musicology may have other possible purposes. Since the 19th century, society has turned back towards music from the past and has contradicted the old custom of «consuming» first and foremost music belonging to its own time. This change of habit demands the musicologist to do an experimental study of such music; not in a distant way in order to consider it a mere historical and humanistic phenomenon from past times, but as «ars fluens», as alive music of the present and as a new artistic fact in which musicologists, performers and other agents get involved in the task of taking the music out from the writings and bringing it into light.
