Surgido a raíz de la colonización española, el mestizaje reviste un gran interés para el entendimiento de la sociedad colonial y de toda la historia social de América Latina. Este artículo busca estudiar el mestizaje. En primer lugar, se pregunta por el tipo de sociedad que caracterizó al período colonial, así como por la ubicación de los mestizos dentro de ella, mostrando su situación marginal. Luego, se aborda el desarrollo de esta sociedad y se observa que la respuesta a esta exclusión se da mediante diversas tácticas de camuflaje social. Estas estrategias se suman al paulatino crecimiento de los mestizos dentro de la sociedad y, basadas en las ventajas del biculturalismo del mismo, el formalmente ignorado mestizo socavó lentamente el mismo sistema social, sin verse obligado a participar como grupo social cohesionado en la revolución burguesa que llevó a la independencia.

Rooted in Spanish colonization, white and Indian crossbreeding is a subject of great interest for understanding both the colonial society and the whole social history of Latin America. This article seeks to study the phenomenon. It first inquires into the type of society that characterized the colonial period as well as about the mestizos' place in it, showing their marginal status. It then approaches the question of the development of this society, emphasizing the mestizo response to their own exclusión through diverse socialcamouflage mechanisms. Given these strategies, together with the slow growth of the mestizo population within Latin American society, and based on the advantages of their bi-culturalism (due to their Hispanic and American origins), the formally ignored mestizos slowly undermined the social system itself, without having to participate as a cohesive social group in the bourgeois revolution that led to independence.
