El escritor Christian August Fischer (1771-1829) puede ser considerado el más importante e influyente difusor de España y su cultura en el área cultural de lengua alemana en torno a 1800. En efecto, hasta la mitad del XIX sus libros de viaje sobre este país se contaron entre los más leídos de un género que ya de por sí gozaba de la aceptación de un público amplio. En este trabajo se ofrece una selección de pasajes significativos de tales libros con objeto de analizar la forma como Fischer percibe la realidad española y la transmite a sus lectores alemanes. Se presta especial atención a sus descripciones del entorno físico, pero también a su aproximación... (Leer más) a los habitantes del país la sociedad española de la época�, tanto en su captación del ambiente rural como en su descripción de la vida urbana de la capital. Basada en el lema «los hombres tienen caracteres nacionales, las mujeres temperamentos nacionales», su peculiar visión de la realidad ajena incluye también una valoración de la psicología nacional de españolas y españoles.

The writer Christian August Fischer (1771-1829) can be considered the most important and influential disseminator of Spain and Spanish culture in the German speaking countries at the turn of the 19th century. In fact, until the mid 19th century, his travel books about Spain were among the most read within a genre that, in itself, enjoyed great popularity. In this paper, we offer a selection of meaningful passages taken from those books in order to analyse how Fischer perceived the Spanish reality and transmitted it to the German readers. We will pay particular attention not only to his descriptions relating to the physical environment, but also... (Leer más) to his approach to the country�s inhabitants �the Spanish society of the time�, both in his perception of the rural atmosphere and his description of the capital�s urban life. Based on the motto «men have national characters, women national moods», his particular vision of a different reality to his own also includes an evaluation of the national psychology of Spanish men and women.
