A vueltas con la etnicidad: ¿de qué sirve el concepto de "etnia"?

    En un contexto pluricultural como el actual, donde se analizan las diversas opciones y alternativas ante el tratamiento de la pluralidad social y cultural, la fundamentación de la perspectiva intercultural no puede ahorrarse el esfuerzo de profundizar en el análisis de los conceptos que subyacen a tales opciones, y que articulan las diferentes prácticas sociales que de ellas se derivan. En efecto, la opción intercultural, en la que se encuadra la educación intercultural, representa inicialmente un modelo de relación abierto y no predeterminado, en contraste con otros como el multiculturalismo cuyos fundamentos teóricos últimos se sostienen en orientaciones 'culturalistas', donde conceptos como el de L 'etnia' adquieren un papel esencial. Como se pone de relieve en este articulo, dicho concepto ha mostrado, desde su aparición, su escasa capacidad para dar razón de las características de los grupos humanos y, por contra, ha aumentado la confusión en el tratamiento de éstos y sus culturas.

    In a multicultural context as the current one, where the diverse options and alternatives faced with the treatment of the social and cultural plurality are analyzed, the fundamentals of the intercultural perspective cannot save the effort to penetrate into the analysis of the concepts that sublie to such options, and that articulate the different social practices that from them stem. In fact, the intercultural option, in which the intercultural education is fitted, represents initially an open and not predetermined model of relation, in contrast with others as the multiculturalism whose last theoretical foundations are supported in culturalist orientations where some concepts like 'etnic group' acquire an essential role. As it is emphasized in this article, from his appearance the above mentioned concept has showed his scanty aptitude to give reason of the characteristics of the human groups and, to opposite, has increased the confusion in the treatment of these and their cultures.
