The Makings of a Leader: Waldeck Rochet. - Waldeck Rochet, a farm worker from La Bresse in the Vosges Mountains, held an important position in the French Communist Party and served as the Party's peasant leader for thirty years. He founded the newspaper La Terre. His political career was not limited to rural areas and issues: he became the Party's secretary-general. This man from the Party establishment opened the FCP to democracy and condemned the Soviet intervention in Czechoslovakia. Under his leadership, the Union of the Left was revived; and the Party took a stand against the USSR for the first time. Can these changes be explained by the biography of this reserved, loyal man who, on departing from politics, left his place to Georges Marchais?

Waldeck Rochet, paysan bressan, devient un cadre important du PCF dont il est le dirigeant paysan pendant trente ans. Créateur du journal La Terre, sa carrière politique ne s'arrête cependant pas au monde rural puisqu'il finit secrétaire général du PCF. Cet homme du sérail ouvre le parti à la démocratie et condamne l'intervention soviétique en Tchécoslovaquie. Son secrétariat est aussi marqué par la relance de l'Union de la gauche et par la première opposition majeure avec l'URSS. Ces changements s'expliquent-ils par la biographie de cet homme discret, fidèle, et qui disparaît de la scène politique en laissant la place à Georges Marchais ?
