The urban landscape of Oradea (northwestern Romania) is still strongly characterized by the presence of a grand Renaissance fortress, designed by Italian architects. The choice of the first settlement (XII century), and the subsequent growth, were guided by the presence of two rivers, that allowed to defend the town, also affecting the socio-economic importance of Oradea. By comparing old maps and documents with remote sensing images, we can reconstruct and understand the development of the city.
