In the Po Plain cities of Bologna and Ferrara, historic buildings share the widespread use of bricks, but door and window frames, colonnades, and entire façade facings are often made of various stones from the Apennines (sandstones, selenitic gypsum, ophiolites) or Mesozoic or Tertiary limestones, imported from Southern Alps area (Verona Red Ammonitic, Istria, Prun, and Vicenza Stones, Noriglio Gray). The rocks perform both structural and aesthetic purposes, often with an extraordinary beauty.
