Resumen de Guerra colonial y guerra de propaganda: Una nueva aproximación a la guerra filipina de Camilo Polavieja (1896-1897)

  Este artículo analiza la “doble campaña” que el Capitán General de Filipinas, Camilo Polavieja, ejecutó durante la Revolución de 1896-1897. Por un lado, expone la campaña militar que Polavieja condujo en Cavite. Sabedor de que hallaría una fuerte resistencia, que incluiría combatientes y “población civil”, Polavieja llevó a cabo una guerra sin cuartel que ignoró los principios de la guerra “con humanidad” que se estaban codificando. Consciente de la mala prensa que ello podía despertar, y de lo perjudicial que podía resultar para sus aspiraciones políticas en la metrópoli, Polavieja lideró también una guerra de propaganda en los diarios de Hong Kong, prensa de alcance internacional. El general justificó sus métodos alegando que eran los únicos efectivos ante lo que retrató como una insurgencia ilegítima y feroz que desconocía las Leyes de la Guerra y que, precisamente por ello, debía quedar fuera de su protección.

  This article analyses the “double campaign” that Captain General Camilo Polavieja conducted during the Philippine Revolution of 1896-1897. On the one hand, it discusses the military campaign that Polavieja conducted in Cavite. Knowing that he would meet stiff resistance, including combatants and civilians, he waged an all-out war that ignored the principles of waging war “with humanity” that were being codified. Knowing the bad press that this could arouse and how damaging it could be to his political aspirations, Polavieja also led a propaganda war in the Hong Kong press, which was international in scope and very harsh on Spain’s handling of the uprising. The general justified his methods on the grounds that they were the only effective means of dealing with what he portrayed as an illegitimate and ferocious insurgency that did not respect the Laws of War and should, therefore, be excluded from their protection.
