    A lo largo del siglo XX Portugal adoptó diferentes regímenes políticos que tenían, hasta 1974, entre sus objetivos el mantenimiento de sus posesiones coloniales. Para conservar la soberanía sobre unos amplios territorios ultramarinos, fundamentalmente africanos, era necesario implantar y mantener un modelo policial que garantizase la estructura colonial. Cada sistema policial exigía unas peculiaridades para adaptarse a la realidad de cada sociedad colonial. Se pretenden estudiar aquí, pues, las peculiaridades de cada modelo policial a lo largo del tiempo (monárquico, republicano, y autoritario), las dinámicas de historia social de los diferentes funcionarios policiales tanto europeos como africanos, su espíritu de cuerpo (identidad profesional), así como las relaciones entre cada cuerpo policial y la comunidad donde prestan servicio. Además, brevemente, también se pretende estudiar aquí cómo la realidad bélica afectó a las distintas fuerzas policiales en las colonias portuguesas africanas. Todas estas cuestiones son el punto de partida para el estudio de un proceso histórico que desapareció abruptamente a partir de la revolución portuguesa de abril 1974.

    Throughout the 20th century, Portugal adopted different political regimes that, until 1974, had among their objectives the maintenance of its colonial possessions. To preserve sovereignty over large overseas territories, mainly African, it was necessary to implement and maintain a police model that guaranteed the colonial structure. Each police system required peculiarities to adapt to the reality of each colonial society. The aim is to study here, therefore, the peculiarities of each police model over time (monarchical, republican, and authoritarian), the dynamics of social history of the different police officers, both European and African, their esprit de corps (professional identity), as well as the relationships between each police force and the community where they serve. In addition, briefly, it is also intended to study how the reality of war affected the different police forces in the Portuguese African colonies. All these questions are the starting point for the study of a historical process that abruptly disappeared after the Portuguese revolution of April 1974.
