Resumen de Children and Youth's Literature: an Approach to ELT in Escuela Normal de Zumpango

Luz Angélica Racilla Sánchez

  • This paper is the result of the participation in the research group “Teacher Trainees Formation Processes and Literacy” from Escuela Normal de Zumpango. It aims to explore and analyze its preliminary results. The main purpose of the research is to adhere English Language Teaching to an already successful approach to promote significant literacy at Escuela Normal de Zumpango: Children and Youth Literature. It explores the first attempt to implement a strategy to generate significant experiences in English language Teaching using Children and Youth’s literature as a mediating agent for language learning from a dual perspective: as an English Language Teacher and as a Literature Promoter. This strategy was designed as a result of the situational context in which English is perceived at Escuela Normal de Zumpango: even though it is an institutionalized capital, the results observed from the inclusion of English in the practicum for Primary Education teacher trainees have demonstrated a reiteration in teaching patterns that do not correspond to teaching practices carried out at Escuela Normal de Zumpango, but rather correspond to the teacher trainees’ previous language learning experiences, according to the interviews with the students that implement such sequences. At this stage of the research, the strategy has been implemented with a group of teacher trainers whose level of competence is representative of the level of competence shown by the teacher trainees using an illustrated text: Les revanche de Lapins.
