  Durante más de trescientos años la historia del mundo (América, Asia, África) se ha escrito aquí, en Europa. Pero Europa se suicidó en dos terribles guerras civiles y, tras la segunda, no solo perdió sus imperios, sino que ella misma fue colonizada por dos potencias extraeuropeas: EE.UU. y Rusia. Y así sigue. Pero la divergencia demográfica entre Occidente y Oriente, sumada a la difusión global de tecnologías, ha redistribuido el poder en el mundo en una inflexión que marca el declive económico y político de Occidente.

  Que sin embargo ha sabido exportar, no solo la tecnología dura, sino también la blanda, en tres órdenes institucionales que son otros tantos vectores de globalización modernizadora: la economía de mercado, la democracia política y la cultura basada en la ciencia.

  Pero la globalización ha generado una profunda dualización social, raíz de un enorme malestar, que se manifiesta en populismos de derechas o de izquierdas. ¿Será Europa capaz de controlar su destino o, como le ocurrió al resto del mundo con anterioridad, serán otros quienes escribirán nuestra propia historia?.

  For more than three hundred years, the history of the world (America, Asia, Africa) was written here, in Europe. But Europe committed suicide in two terrible civil wars, and after the second, not only did it lose its empires, but it was itself colonized by two non-European powers:

  the US and Russia. And so it remains. But the demographic divergence between the West and the East, combined with the global diffusion of technologies, has redistributed power in the world in a turning point that marks the economic and political decline of the West. Nevertheless, the West has managed to export not only hard technology but also soft technology, in three institutional frameworks that are key vectors of modernizing globalization: the market economy, political democracy, and a culture based on science. But globalization has generated a deep social divide, the root of a profound discontent, which manifests itself in right –or left– wing populisms. Will Europe be capable of controlling its destiny, or, as happened previously to the rest of the world, will othersbe the ones to write our own history?.
