Resumen de Análisis de la evolución y características de las pruebas funcionales y estructurales en Oftalmología: Estudio retrospectivo en un centro hospitalario de tercer nivel

  Introducción: Este estudio tiene como objetivo analizar la cantidad, características y evolución de las pruebas funcionales y estructurales realizadas en el Servicio de Oftalmología del Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria entre agosto de 2021 y julio de 2024.

  Métodos: Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo, descriptivo y observacional. Se recopiló información a través de la base de datos generada por la gestión clínica del hospital, que incluye el tipo de prueba, fecha de realización y previsión o no de la misma. Se analizaron las frecuencias relativas y absolutas de las pruebas realizadas en las distintas áreas del complejo hospitalario, el tipo de prueba y las pruebas previstas e imprevistas.

  Resultados: Se registraron 42.706 pruebas imprevistas (media anual: 3.558,8 ± 256,3) y 9.174 pruebas previstas (media anual: 764,5 ± 113,2). Se observó una tendencia creciente en las pruebas realizadas en el hospital, mientras que en otras áreas la actividad se mantuvo estable. La tomografía de coherencia óptica (OCT) macular representó casi el 50 % de las pruebas, con un incremento anual del 1 %. Las pruebas imprevistas aumentaron del 17 % al 21 % en 2024, principalmente por el incremento en la demanda de OCT de mácula.

  Conclusiones: Los resultados muestran estabilidad en la mayoría de las pruebas oftalmológicas, con un incremento progresivo de la OCT de mácula en los tres años del periodo del estudio y un aumento de las pruebas imprevistas en 2024. Estos hallazgos resaltan la necesidad de optimizar la planificación y respuesta asistencial en el ámbito hospitalario.

  Introduction: This study aims to analyze the quantity, characteristics, and evolution of functional and structural tests performed in the Ophthalmology Department of the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria between August 2021 and July 2024.

  Methods: A retrospective, descriptive, and observational study was conducted. Information was collected from a database generated by the hospital’s clinical management, including the type of test, date of performance, whether it was planned or not, and the number of noshows. The relative and absolute frequencies of tests performed across the different areas of the hospital, the type of test, and the planned and unplanned tests were analyzed.

  Results: A total of 42,706 unplanned tests (annual mean: 3,558.8 ± 256.3) and 9,174 planned tests (annual mean: 764.5 ± 113.2) were recorded. A growing trend was observed in the tests performed in the hospital, while activity in other areas remained stable. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the macula represented nearly 50 % of the tests, with an annual increase of 1 %. Unplanned tests increased from 17 % to 21 % in 2024, mainly due to the increased demand for macular OCT.

  Conclusions: The results show stability in most ophthalmological tests, with a progressive increase in macular OCT over the past three years and a rise in unplanned tests in 2024. These findings highlight the need for optimizing planning and response strategies in the hospital setting.
