    La fortuna historiográfica que han gozado desde siempre los casos de hechicería en la España preindustrial no se explica tanto por su volumencomo por la riqueza de contenidos que proporcionan. Fueron perseguidos portoda clase de tribunales, especialmente por los inquisitoriales, pero de Llerenatambién se conservan procesos incoados por el de su provisorato. En amboscasos se nos informa del funcionamiento de los tribunales, de las circunstancias y el entorno asociados a los acusados y especialmente de las expectativasatesoradas por quienes demandaban sus servicios, que podemos condensar,como dice el título, en la búsqueda o recuperación del bienestar, de la fortunay del amor. Entre todos los que intervinieron en los procesos se puede dibujarun cuadro, tan animado como diverso, donde se reflejan las inquietudes de lasociedad extremeña a caballo entre los siglos XVI y XVII.

    The historiographical interest long enjoyed by witchcraft casesin pre-industrial Spain is less a result of their volume and more a testamentto the richness of the material they provide. These cases were pursued by avariety of courts, particularly the Inquisition, though in Llerena we also findrecords initiated by the ecclesiastical tribunal of its provisorate. Both types ofrecords shed light on the functioning of these courts, the circumstances andenvironments surrounding the accused, and especially the hopes and expectations of those who sought the witches’ services. These aspirations, as the titlesuggests, can be distilled into the pursuit or recovery of well-being, prosperity,and love. From the individuals involved in these cases, a lively and diversetableau emerges, reflecting the concerns and desires of Extremaduran societyduring the transition from the 16th to the 17th century
