  This article aims at performing a critical interpretation of the novel São Bernardo (1934), by Graciliano Ramos, in the light of Aesthetic Theory (1970) by Theodor W. Adorno. We will seek to analyze the moments of contradiction and antagonism that the work encloses, considering the fundamental concepts of Aesthetics and the contrasts found in the logical and formal structure of the novel. This analysis and interpretation will lead us to propose the tragic sense of the experience of the modern subject that is implied in the reading of the second novel of the Brazilian writer.

  Este artigo tem como objetivo realizar uma interpretação crítica do romance São Bernardo (1934), de Graciliano Ramos, à luz da Teoria Estética, de Theodor W. Adorno. Buscaremos analisar os momentos de contradição e antagonismo que a obra encerra, considerando os conceitos fundamentais da estética adorniana e os contrastes que se concentram na estrutura lógica e formal do romance. Tal análise e interpretação nos levarão a propor, por conseguinte, o sentido trágico da experiência do homem moderno que subjaz à leitura do segundo romance do escritor brasileiro.
