Auxiliary vebs -and the periphrases that they form part of- have been described in detail as a linguistic resource in order to "expand" (shade, differentiate, specify) analytically the content expressed by the verbal inflexion. Therefore, one usually speaks of "modal", "aspectual", "temporal" periphrases etc. In this paper I claim that the periphrases occupy a specific area, which is neither Grammar nor Lexicon but "Determination", the linguistic function of which is to limit the reference of the auxiliarized lexemes, and to locate them with regard to precise coordinates, which are the epistemic stance of the speaker and the ordering or quantification of a process or of a series of events.
