Spanish, French and Catalan all possess verbal periphrases of the "go + infinitive" type. But while this centuries-old grammaticalization path led to analytic future forms in French and Spanish, Catalan developed a Perfective Past of the type vaig cantar (="I sang"). In a recent development, however, a neyw analytic future of the Spanish type seems to be emerging in Catalan, which is differentiated from the analytic Perfective Past by the preposition a: vaig a cantar (I'm going to sing"). Whereas Catalan grammarians tend to dismiss these forms as non-genuine calques from Spanish, it is argued in this paper that Catalan is merely following the same grammaticalization path as meny other languages and that its emerging go-future can be shown to be internally motivated
