This paper discusses the grammaticalization of verbs of movement in Portuguese, like ir, vir, andar, that are employed in various periphrastic constructions, mainly the former: in present days, particularly in Brazilian Portuguese (BP), the periphrasis "present of ir + infinitive" is replacing the synthetic future. It is argued that ir is in its final stage of auxiliarization, without however being completely grammaticalized yet, because there is still a context, e.g. Vou ir, when speakers perceive that they are "using twice the verb ir".
