El Valle del Albegna: producción y movilidad en la frontera noroccidental del territorio vulcente durante el período Etrusco (siglos VIII-III a.C.)

    La cuenca del río Albegna, en el límite meridional de la actual Toscana, fue durante el periodo etrusco un espacio dinámico articulado a lo largo del eje del río y el litoral. Este territorio constituye la línea de frontera, visible a través de algunos marcadores del paisaje, entre los territorios controlados por Vulci (actual Montalto di Castro) y Roselle (Rusellae), así como de la llamada Etruria meridional y la septentrional. Sin embargo, la misma directriz longitudinal del río y los distintos ejes que la atraviesan en forma de valles de sus afluentes y el sistema lagunar costero permiten la comunicación entre las dos zonas y forman un corredor natural que conecta la costa y el comercio marítimo con los territorios de la Etruria interna, en especial Chiusi (Clusium) y Orvieto (Volsinii) que a su vez permitían el acceso al valle del Tíber.

    Desde el siglo XIX se han sucedido una serie de prospecciones, excavaciones y estudios que han hecho del valle una de las zonas de Etruria de las que disponemos de mayor cantidad de datos a nivel territorial. En este artículo nos proponemos hacer una síntesis de la información adquirida hasta el momento, focalizando nuestra atención en los recursos naturales y las actividades agropecuarias realizadas en la zona (con especial atención a la producción de vino), así como en las vías de comunicación existentes con otros territorios, por las que personas, animales y mercancías se movían en la Antigüedad.

    Por último, trataremos brevemente la exportación de las ánforas vinarias etruscas locales. Estas seguían los itinerarios marítimos septentrionales del Mediterráneo que llegaban hasta el Languedoc y Ampurias (Emporion), las mismas rutas que seguirán en época tardo-republicana las ánforas producidas en los hornos de Albinia, en la desembocadura del río

    The Albegna basin, currently at the southern border of Toscana, was during the Etruscan period a dynamic space articulated along the course of the river and the coastline. This territory represents the borderline, visible through some landscape markers, between the territories controlled by the Etruscan city of Vulci (current comune of Montalto di Castro in Lazio) and those controlled by ancient Roselle (Rusellae). It also settles the boundary between Southern and Northern Etruria. However, the same lengthwise line of the river and the perpendicular routes opened by its tributaries and the coastal lagoon system allow communication between both areas, as well as it opens a natural corridor that connects the sea and maritime trade with the cities in the Etruscan hinterland, specially Chiusi (Clusium) and Orvieto (Volsinii), which were at the same time connected with the Tiber valley. Since the 19th century there have been a series of surveys, excavations and studies that have made the valley one of the areas in Etruria with more information available at a territorial scale. In this article we propose a synthesis of the information acquired so far, focusing our attention on the natural resources and the agricultural activities carried out in the area (with special attention to wine production), as well as on the existing interregional communication routes by which people, animals and merchandise moved in Antiquity. Finally, we will briefly discuss the export of local Etruscan wine amphoras. These followed the northern Mediterranean maritime itineraries that reached Languedoc and Ampurias (Emporion). These are the same routes that the amphoras produced in the ovens of Albinia, at the mouth of the river, would follow in the Roman late-Republican period
